Diego Fassolis new set of Orchestral Suites and Tripelkonzert are absolutely fantastic! Die hards will tell you that the classic early 80's versions have not been surpassed. I don't agree. I have lived with versions by both Pinnock and Goebel and find the playing on the new set to be every bit as lively but with a much better, more lucid recording. Interpretatively, the newcomer is slightly faster in most movements giving an added sense of flow. And Diego Fassolis is every bit as amazing on the harpsichord . Bravo!
The four Orchestral Suites or Ouvertures BWV 1066 1069 are a set of compositions by Johann Sebastian Bach, probably composed around 1720 in Cöthen. The word ouverture refers to an opening movement in which a section of slow dotted-note rhythm is followed by a fugue; at the time, this name was also used to refer to a whole suite of dance-pieces in the French baroque style.
