Release Notes
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Sultans of Swing" was written after Knopfler saw a band play in a deserted pub. "Down to the Waterline" was written about a romance Knopfler had in his youth. "Water of Love" was inspired by J.J. Cale. Southbound Again was written during one of Knopfler's trips from Newcastle to London, about him questioning where he belongs. "In the Gallery" was written about a sculptor Harry Phillips who wasn't trendy enough to be included in the London and Leeds art scene. "Wild West End" and "Lions" were written about Mark Knopfler's early days in the west end of London.

The single "Sultans of Swing" first broke the US top five early spring 1979 (being a hit a full five months after the album was released there) and then rose to #8 in the British charts. "Water of Love" was also released as a single in some countries, but only charted in Australia, reaching #54. In Europe, the album sold four million copies while in the U.S. it sold two million copies.

The album was remastered and released with the rest of the Dire Straits catalogue in 1996 to most of theworld excluding the U.S. and on 19 September 2000 in the United States. For 2010 release of an anniversary album is planned. It will be devoted the 30 anniversary of the edition of a vinyl.[2]

The cover image is taken from a painting by Chuck Loyola, while the Dire Straits Fender icon was designed by Geoff Halpern
