Hoobastank werd in 1994 gevormd in de Agoura Hills, een voorstadje van Lost Angels County. Zanger Doug Robb en gitarist Dan Estrin deden op school mee aan een competitie tussen bands en besloten om een band te gaan vormen. Nadat ze Markku Lappalainen en Chris Hesse erbij betrokken hadden, was Hoobastank geboren. Volgens zanger Doug Robb heeft de naam geen specifieke betekenis. "You're going to ask me what it means. It doesn't mean anything. And it's really cool, it's one of those old high school inside-joke words that didn't really mean anything."
