Scott-Heron geldt als belangrijke inspiratiebron voor de hedendaagse rapmuziek. De in Chicago geboren artiest, werd ook wel de 'Godfather of Rap' genoemd voor zijn spoken-word optredens. Bekend is zijn nummer 'The Revolution Will Not be Televised' uit begin jaren zeventig.

NRC-muziekrecensent Amanda Kuyper in reactie op het overlijden van Scott-Heron:
 
"Zijn muziek is en wordt nog veel gesampled, van Kanye West tot Common. In veel van zijn muziek kwam de worsteling met drugs en alcohol terug. Maar niemand kon politiek zo fileren in teksten. Zowel blank als zwart kreeg er van langs in messcherpe bewoordingen."
