Het is 1985 als Cameron Mackintosh voor het eerst de musical Les Misérables op de planken zet in het Barbican Theatre in Londen. De kritieken zijn niet van de lucht en in de recensies wordt de musical met de grond gelijk gemaakt. Te somber, te donker, te saai, te lang, te deprimerend. Inmiddels zijn we 25 jaar verder en is Les Misérables de meest succesvolle, meest opgevoerde en langstlopende musical ooit en draaien er in Londen momenteel zelfs twee producties tegelijk.
